Jeannette was found outside of a free clinic, apparently
abandoned by her birth parents, and spent her earlier years in and out of
various fosterages. Considered a scatter-brained and flighty child (this being
before the days of ADHD, when a ‘daydreamer’ received the ruler to the
backside, rather than a prescription for Ritalin), she bounced from home to
home, never losing her cheery disposition, no matter what sort of abusive words
or treatment she received. Indeed, foster parents who did not ‘spare the rod’
tended to find themselves on the receiving end of strange misfortunes, such as
waking up a meter over the bed, to land with a crash.
Named ‘a devil-child’ by a particularly loathsome family,
who claimed that she drugged them and tormented them in some unspecified way,
she was deemed to be ‘unplaceable’ and soon received
a scholarship to a private school, the Claremont Academy, sponsored by a man
she had never met, by name of Adrian Eldritch, who was apparently picking up
any costs for her tuition!
Shuttled off unceremoniously to this Academy by relieved
caretakers, who were at wits end what to do with her, Jeannette is now happily
enrolled at the Academy, and under the tutelage of upperclassman Seven, has
learned to consciously control the ‘tricks’ that once plagued those who
mistreated her. It is believed that she is a modern day ‘changeling child,’ a
half-fae being equal parts flesh and dream, but, as
with so many things, she has little interest in exploring the deeper secrets of
her heritage, preferring to flit about on (apparently cosmetic) wings in
diminutive size, and transform others to share her abilities of Shrinking,
Flight or Concealment.
Despite her change in size, she does not lose any strength
or carrying capacity, but those she involuntarily changes *do* suffer the
adjustments, and the average person may find himself in for a surprisingly
effective beating when reduced to her size! Faced with a training drone
stronger than herself, her novel solution was to reduce it to pocket-size, and
then carry aloft while it struggled feebly to break her grasp, only to drop it
once she reached a suitable height.
When she reduces in size, her skin and hair change color,
and she sprouts both antennae and wispy insect-like
wings. The antennae don’t seem to have any sensory abilities, although Seven
has suggested that she will likely develop the ability to recognize
enchantments in time, as her magical nature asserts itself, and the wings do
not seem to have any effect on her ability to fly. Indeed, when she confers the
power of flight to another, they do not gain wings at all. Seven has suggested
that she may also develop further shape-altering powers, or at the ability to
mask her appearance with quasi-real illusions, as part of a faerie glamour.
