Felicia grew up in New Orleans, and while her father made an attempt to teach her about her Haitian heritage, she would have none of it, whole-heartedly embracing all things American, and refusing to learn anything about ‘that place you left behind.’

Growing up mulatto in a racially divisive school district ‘Licia ended up getting into her share of fights, from one side claiming she was ‘uppity’ and from the other claiming she was an ‘oreo.’ The name ‘Fifi’ started out as a mocking insult, and yet she quickly adopted it as a badge of pride, stomping the crap out of her worst tormentors, and yet somehow never quite getting caught. She had always been stronger than normal, and her father seemed to know and anticipate this development, and prepared her to keep these traits a secret. He tried to explain it to her, but words like Papa Doc and Tonton Macout crossed his lips and she lost interest, recognizing that it had something to do with ‘that other place.’

She found a place where her unusual strength could be useful, but not suspicious, in gymnastics, and was a common sight at various self-defense dojos, where she went through the motions, so that she could conceal her superhuman strength and resilience behind a façade of skill and ‘using her opponent’s strength against him’ or ‘rolling with the force of the blow.’

It was a visit by Siren that led to her ‘discovery,’ which, it turns out was arranged by her father, who hoped to find in Siren the sort of teaching that he couldn’t provide for his super-powered child, who was rapidly growing far beyond his skills to control, and whom he feared would become nothing more than a super-powered bully, without better guidance than he was providing. Siren did not recognize the source of her powers at first, and was deeply troubled after discussing the situation with Felicia’s father and finding out the truth of the matter. Siren arranged for Felicia to be enrolled at Claremont Academy, and Headmaster Duncan Summers has also privately met with Siren regarding ‘concerns’ about their new students’ powers.

Felicia knows that there have been closed-doors meetings about her, and that people like Siren, a living legend, said to even be a goddess in the flesh, seem *scared* of her. She’s not sure what to make of that. Lots of people are stronger. Lots of people are tougher. Just about *everybody* seems to do something cooler, like turn to acid, or summon up fiery eagles, or disintegrate stuff with a harsh word, or turn people into action figures.

Still, Felicia has decided not to worry about it. She's in amazing shape, with no signs of her superhuman strength, just a lean taut gymnasts physique, and the easy confidence of someone who knows that nobody can messs with her and expect to walk away. She keeps her hair cut short, a buzz-cut really, because she's never felt like taking care of it, and similarly avoids makeup or nail polish or other 'girly stuff,' as she's worked hard at convincing herself that she's not really interested in that sort of thing (rather than admit her private fear that dressing herself up would be too much like putting lipstick on a pig, since she's not happy with her appearance at all, thinking that she's too muscular, or too dark, or too white, or too *something* to explain why she can't just have friends like everybody else...). It's become a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy, as she plays the 'I don't need anybody' card and pushes potential friends away, and increasingly she finds herself on the sidelines watching everyone else living the sort of life that she insists doesn't interest her.

She’s learned how to fight, and that’s what she does well. It’s about all her powers are good for, unlike some of her team-mates who can heal people or shield people or even levitate them out of danger. She’s taken to wearing a full-body costume and mask, concealing her identity, and taken the ‘superhero’ name of Sunset, liking to say corny things like, “Lights out!” or “Night-night!” just before she clobbers someone. (She went briefly through Nemesis, Denial and Dusk, before settling on Sunset. Her costume has remained steady, however.)
