Darren, called ‘Dare’ by his friends, because they could dare him to do anything, was the son of a successful businessman who ran a construction firm. During the summers, he would hike and do Scouts and various other activities, interspersed with working for his dad’s firm to gather up the cash he needed for his other activities, since his dad remains a firm believer in his kids earning every penny they get out of him and learning the value of both work and money.

While his dad wasn’t complicit in the matter, some of the land on which he was developing a lot of housing units turned out to be a top-secret dumpsite for all sorts of dangerous wastes. The concrete enclosure concealed beneath the soil contained dozens of dangerous chemical toxins and waste-products, as well as hundreds of tons of radioactive slurry, supposedly ‘buried safely away’ decades before, and long forgotten. Digging the foundation for the complexes swimming pool, the scoop cracked the surface of the degraded bunker, and Darren, standing ‘at a safe distance’ ended up being sucked into the subterranean enclosure, pulled in along with hundreds of pounds of soil and deposited into a toxic stew of materials that had long since eaten their way out of the metal barrels intended to contain them.

Darren erupted from the mess, a sixty foot tall composite of sludge and debris, spewing toxins and radiation all about, and it took a half-dozen heroes to shut down the out-of-control reactions that were mutating his body, allowing him to finally regain some semblance of control, after which he mercifully passed out, and reverted to his human form.

The site is now a Superfund poster-case, and who knows how many more millions of dollars will be required to make it remotely safe. Darren himself has enrolled in Claremont Academy to learn how to control his new abilities, and his father has splashed out ridiculous sums of money to keep the family name out of the papers, giving his son some measure of privacy. Ideally, his father wants to make the whole thing go away, but as Darren learns to control the dangerous side-effects of his powers, he is no longer quite so sure he wants to go back to being ‘plain old Darren…’
