Alfonso is the team leader, a career soldier in the Spanish military, retired after an explosion during flight training left him deaf in one ear and suffering from fainting spells. He managed to ‘keep his hand in’ by moving into a technical support position for the men he used to work alongside, and ended up working as ‘test-pilot’ (read, guinea pig) for an experimental suit of power armor, built using a reactive armor technology loosely modeled on Soviet tank armor.

The theory was, when the armor was struck, it would ‘explode back’ at the source of impact. When the heavily armored fists struck a foe, they would detonate at the points of impact and drive the foe back. Instead of strapping actual explosives to the armor, the researchers created a charged particle field that imbued the armor and provided the explosive force, without harming the armor itself (or, in theory, it’s wearer).

As an added bonus, the armor proved capable of flight, using magnetic currents to repel itself from the ground, and accelerate the air around itself in a form of propulsive vortex (much like a magnetohydrodynamic drive, with the action occurring externally). The suit worked like a charm, much to the surprise of the testing staff, who were somewhat leery of the concepts behind the research, and Alfonso turned out to be quite adept at adapting to the suits unique properties. Having military training, and even a small amount of command experience, Alfonso ended up being the logical choice to lead the fledgling EU superteam, as Trueno (‘thunder’ in Spanish), and called Striking Thunder for the English-speaking media, after the inevitable booming explosions that go off whenever he is struck, or impacts someone with his oversized gauntlets.
