‘Chelle has been the most
popular girl in school, as long as she can remember. Somewhat short and very
slender, she has pale white skin, long straight blonde hair and piercing blue
eyes, and is very attractive.
She will not settle for being a pretty face, and has
literally mapped out her future in advance. She will start with journalism,
using her pretty face to get a job reading the weather at a local station, and
using that to springboard herself into serious journalism, with hard-hitting
exposes and social and political pieces. Once she gets her foot in *that* door,
she wants to get into serious politics, first as a consultant, and then
eventually in an appointed position. (She’s done the elected thing, with the
whole Homecoming Queen nonsense, and has determined that elected positions are
too much work for too little time in. She wants to be an appointee, who keeps
her position long after her appointER is put out to
pasture.)
For a kid fresh out of high school, she’s great with the
people skills, and she really seemed well on her way to reaching her goals,
until the last week of her senior year, as she was preparing for an internship
at the local television station (not reading weather, yet, she knew this was
only gopher-work, but still, it was the ‘foot in the door’ that she was looking
for) when her mutant powers manifested. In public.
A curtain of darkness literally fell on her bright future
as an overly-excited students car swerved out of control in the school parking
lot and was about to run her over (the driver was in no position to even notice
this, as his passenger had him in a headlock and was punching him in the ribs,
both of them laughing uncontrollably). She had time to see the car and throw
her hand up, and all went black before the sound of crunching metal and a rush
of displaced air washed over her. The darkness faded, and the crumpled car
smoked in front of her, having been stopped instantly by the dark force that
appeared between them. The driver was injured, but not seriously, while his
passenger was crippled, his back broken in the crash. And ‘Chelle
went from the Homecoming Queen, with an admission packet from Columbia U, on
her first steps to her master plan of being the first woman President, to an outed mutant freak, who’s first act was to cripple a member
of the football team for life.
She found herself no longer welcome in school, with dozens
of concerned parents demanding that she not be allowed to endanger their
children, and her final exams were brought to her home on a weekend by a
sympathetic teacher, so that she could at least graduate despite her situation.
Her internship dried up, with the station manager explaining that he couldn’t
risk the negative publicity and that his employees where already citing safety
concerns. In retrospect, she wouldn’t have been able to satisfy attendance
requirements anyway, as she spent much of that summer in pre-trial motions
regarding the accident and her fellow students’ injuries. (The whole matter was
eventually dropped, although she has no idea why.) Her parents, always somewhat
distant and bemused by her naked ambition and fanatical devotion to her goals,
suddenly seemed horribly fake, with ‘Chelle having
learned enough about people over her years as social mover-and-shaker at the
high-school level to suddenly recognize the phony concern, blatant
condescension and covert worried glances from her own mother.
Possibly the only thing that has kept her from going
completely off the deep end is the discovery of other girls like herself, many
of whom have found their own families unable to deal with their natures, and
their lives completely shaken up by who they have become.
Experimenting with her powers, she has found that she
creates momentary manifestations of what she calls 'Dark Matter.' They cannot
seem to exist within the material world for any length of time, quickly
steaming and smoldering into nothingness, but while they exist, they are
seemingly indestructible (at least able to stop an out-of-control car...) and
when she hurls a javelin of 'Dark Matter' at something, it invariably
demolishes it in a destructive blast that leaves whatever remains of the target
item twisted and warped beyond recognition, as if subjected to strange
gravitational forces or non-euclidean pressures (a junked
car she tested her attacks on was twisted *through* itself, in a manner that
should have been physically impossible. Parts of it were literally passed
through, and stuck within, other parts of it, as if it
had been wrapped up like a ghostly pretzel!).
She has noticed that she no longer has to eat (and
frankly, it took awhile, since she’s never really cared for food, just grabbing
whatever is handy when her stomach is growling to ‘shut it up,’). She isn’t
sure what to make of this, but has also noticed that her skin sometimes seems
to feel harder and colder, at least to her own touch. She woke up from a
nightmare of the darkness growing within her until it ate her up from within,
and her skin and face was sucked down into an endless void, and now alternately
fears the changes happening to her body and has a sort of morbid curiosity as
to what will come next… [More immunities, as more and more of her living bodily
processes are subsumed by Dark Matter processes.]
