Joy was a very focused young woman throughout her
schooling, and quickly ended up working in law enforcement, and then as part of
a government anti-gang task force, where her job was to infiltrate youth gangs
and serve as a combined ‘mole’ and ‘narc.’
She was always adaptable in nature, hanging out with a
fair cross-section of people, and finding something about just about anyone
that she could ‘latch onto’ and use to fit in. But after a few years of this
sort of undercover work, her natural talent underwent a dramatic change, and
her actual *body* began to subtly change to fit the roles she was playing,
something which she herself hardly noticed, but her rarely seen police
associates at ‘work’ began to notice, and find increasingly creepy.
In the distant past, her kind had been able to shift the
pigments in their skin, to better camouflage themselves against predators, but
this ability had been long lost. At first, she thought that perhaps she was
some sort of throwback, but when an infiltration went wrong, weapons flew and
she found herself striking back as a ten foot tall juggernaut of armor-plated
destruction, with a massive mace-like tail bludgeoning her attackers into
submission, Joy realized that she was something *more* than just a ‘throwback.’
Recognizing that her talents were suitable for far more
than infiltrating gangs of rowdy kids, she began working for faceless figures
in the upper echelons of the government, infiltrating all sorts of groups.
Businessmen, diplomats, aides to important political figures, underworld
criminal groups, all became her second home, and she played many roles, and
betrayed hundreds of powerful people, during those years working for the shadow
company.
She received her toughest job yet, to infiltrate the
Scales of Justice, as not all agencies within the government entirely trusted
Doctor Scales’ famous record of lucky finds and convenient discoveries… But her
powers failed to prepare her for a leader who could read and control minds,
and, for now, she is as trapped as the rest of her team-mates, her true motives
twisted and obscured, replaced with loyalty to Doctor Scale. Ironically, in the
months that she’s been serving as a Scale of Justice, she’s probably done more
‘good’ than she would have working for the Company, and, more importantly,
she’s actually being *recognized* for it, and not simply shuffled off to
another top-secret assignment that nobody can ever know of.
Doctor Scale’s manipulations have played to this buried
longing for recognition and acceptance for herself, instead of her ‘utility’ as
one of the many masks and lies she can live, and so
she has fallen into his thrall. In truth, she’s never *really* craved
recognition, and was content for years to live this shadowy half-life, but the
Doctor’s spells have flagged the flames of old resentments and brought this
small facet of her personality to the forefront, reminding her of her teen
years, when she was the envy of her drama-class peers for her acting skills,
and allowing her to be famous, as herself, for the first time.
The fact that unmasking the mask and having her flaunt her
abilities has greatly compromised her effectiveness for undercover work in the
future is something of a delightful irony in the Doctor’s eyes… He wants to
make her enjoy her newfound fame and popularity, and yet also to insure that
she *can never go back.*
As for her team-mates, Joy, as always, fits in well, and
has taken to nagging Veloci-Raptor for his ‘laziness’
and ‘sense of entitlement,’ with the two having a sense of rivalry, and yet
that masking her very real irritation at how he never seems to have to work for
anything, lounging about and never studying to master any of the seemingly
endless things he ‘figures out.’
In a fight, Joy takes a large armored form with some form
of potent natural Strike (her favorite being an ankylosaur,
modeled on an old boyfriend), and then uses Assessment to choose a target (from
under cloak of Concealment), move to within near the target, take Improved Aim,
and then Power Attack a Stunning Attack to knock them silly. Note that her Large size and her fast Elongation allows her to make a
‘melee’ attack on a foe up to 15’ away! If seriously hurt, she will back off,
re-Conceal in a safe location, and enter her healing trance, which requires
full Concentration, but is sufficient to purge her body of any injury.
