Set Verdigris has always been a runner, ever since he was
a hatchling, none of his clutch could keep up with him, and he loved the
feeling of the wind rushing against his scales. With a dozen siblings, and a
none-too-spacious home situation, he poured himself into his athleticism,
enjoying the delicious sense of *aloneness* and individuality that he could
find in his gift for speed. With the noise and bustle of his large family far
behind, he was no longer one of many, but a man alone, unique and in his own
place, where none of his annoying siblings could reach him, left behind in the
dust.
A tumble in a sporting event left him with a torn muscle
in his leg, and he was unable to run, or barely even walk unsupported, trapped
at home for months. He nearly went mad, and nearly took his family with him,
snapping at them in frustration over his condition. So when a shifty fellow
offered him a chance to ‘learn how the big boys ran,’ the ‘secrets of the
pros,’ he was lured into the world of performance-enhancing chemicals, first to
deaden the pain, then to promote tissue growth and healing, and finally to
hyper-oxygenate his blood, to make him faster than ever before! ‘Everybody does
it,’ he was assured, and he allowed himself to believe, since it was the drugs
that had given him back his world. But it had changed. There were things he
could no longer outrun, and he could never find the ‘zone’ where he had just
opened up and left his worries behind. Instead, it seemed that his guilt and
shame, the pack of secrets and lies and petty acts of theft he was committing
to support his new habit, were forever nipping at his heels, taunting his every
step.
He would likely have been imprisoned and disgraced soon
enough, but his young heart gave out under the stress of the various drugs he
was unwisely mixing, and it was during attempts to resuscitate him that a freak
mutation occurred, with the marginal effects of the performance-enhancing drugs
being boosted a thousand-fold, and making him the Fastest Saurian Alive!
It was Doctor Scale who took him in afterwards, and showed
him how to adjust to his incredible speed. Doctor Scale also designed for him
the padded costume he now wears, to protect him from the painful results of a
200 MPH ‘tumble,’ and protect his eyes from the extreme speeds at which he
travels. And it was Doctor Scale who suggested to him that he skip the whole
drug angle when coming out to the world as a new member of the Scales of
Justice, explaining that it would set a bad example for other young athletes if
they got the notion from his story that performance-enhancing drugs could make
them into super-heroes! And so the ‘good Doctor’ sank his claws into yet
another, using this little white lie to create a layer of guilt into which he
could nestle. Blackmail is such an ugly word, but even if it has never been
said, Seth is somberly aware that the popularity that he has achieved as a
member of the Scales of Justice could be stripped away with a word from his
‘kindly benefactor…’ He *likes* being a hero, and using his powers to help
people, and yet that too could pass, and himself made a virtual pariah, if he
doesn’t do what his mentor tells him.
The stereotype of a speedster is that they are hyperactive
and fast-paced and get bored easily. Seth is the opposite. He's a lizard. He
can move blindingly fast, when he wants to, but is perfectly content to sit in
a warm place and lie absolutely motionless for hours on end, just allowing time
to quietly pass. He can be sociable, but it is notable that he spends a lot of
time alone, and when he does interact with others, it's on his own terms, in
his own time, and when *he's* in the mood. He can be a bit surly when his
personal time is intruded upon, even to people he likes or respects, as he
takes his alone time *very* seriously. People occasionally ask him what he's
thinking, and he says, 'nothing.' They assume he just doesn't want to share or
open up or he's all uptight or something, but actually, when he says he's
thinking about 'nothing,' nine times out of ten, he was really thinking about
*nothing,* just sitting back and letting the world do it's thing. Once asked
about this, his telepathic companion Hindbrain nodded to him and said, 'It's
very peaceful in there.'
[Note: I broke up his Super-Speed into it's components,
because he isn't so good at the whole 'fast tasks' thing, and his attack,
quickness and speed numbers end up being wonky because of his Racial 'powers'
including a level of Speed and some Strike. I wanted to break them out and vary
them a bit.]
