Millenia have passed, and still Hades fumes at the continued blasphemous
existence of that cursed man Daedalus. Even
putting Taurus on a special ‘work-release’ program demanding many souls
in sacrifice for a new lease on life turned out to be a disappointment, as
the man-bull seems to be in no great hurry to complete his task…
And so, after one reminder too many, Hades has chosen
the most vicious tactic he can think of, very carefully releasing the soul
of Daedalus’ long-lost son, Icarus,
selectively altering the memories of this ancient soul to have only dreams
of his former existence as the son of Daedalus,
and a fully functional ‘fake’ set of memories of growing up in this modern
age, strangely intermingled, and leaving him with odd gaps (such as the inability
to drive a car or operate a computer, and yet an inexplicable knack for piloting
small aircraft, and with his considerable knowledge of the ‘technology’ of
his day and age somehow translated into a working knowledge of modern technology…).
Hades put this newly reborn young man, called ‘Jason
Harris’ in this life, into a situation where he ‘discovered’ the armor of
a World War II-era hero called the Iron Eagle (a German hero, who fought
on the side of Germany at the beginning of the war, but ‘betrayed his people’
and turned to the side of the Allies as the atrocities of the Nazi party came
to light) during an archaelogical dig run by the
couple selected to be his ‘parents’ in this new existence. These parents,
the Harris,’ died in the cave-in that revealed the secret chamber containing
the battlesuit, and Hades arranged for a few spirit-possessed
and mystically-enraged and enhanced jungle animals to attack the young man,
and force him to don the armor and become a costumed hero of sorts, the better
to come to the attention of his true father.
And so the young man returned to his ‘parents’ home in
Freedom City, unaware that he had never actually been to this ‘home’
he had such strange and conflicted memories of. Despite the strange circumstances
of his parents deaths in Brazil, it seemed that the whole event was swept
under the rug by glazed-eyed embassy personnel, and he ended up back home,
the grieving young man inexplicably allowed to bring home ‘his parents research’
in it’s sealed locker, despite it being the sort of thing that should have
*never* made it past a security scanner…
Still strange dreams haunted his nights, of a different
time with dark-haired young girls in sandals and strange white dresses, flowers
twined in their hair, dancing and sharing wine from the bottle with him under
moonlit skies, riding sleek mares fast across the fields, passing marching
men holding spears and shields? He found it eased his mind to don this strange
flying machine, and to soar into the night, losing himself in the smell of
the engine grease and the warm shuddering strength of the metal shell encasing
his limbs. It was flying through the sky in this manner that he first encountered
the agents of Hades, mortal death-cultists who summoned up beasts in service
of a lord they did not even know by name, to attack Icarus
and force him presence into the light. The metallic Stymphalian
Birds were the first such attack, manifesting as gigantic crows that dropped
feathers of icy black steel to slice those beneath, sowing chaos in their
wake. Icarus was one of the half-dozen teenaged
heroes that the press dubbed ‘Young
Freedom’ who seemed to spring up from the woodwork to repel this
threat, and the following attacks, and finally locate and apprehend the cultists
responsible.
Icarus only has one true 'super-power,' and that is that he cannot die,
until he has satisfied Hades objective, of securing the soul of his father.
Any fatal injury before that time will simply 'not
take.' Unless Hades wishes to simply kill him to make a point, that is...
[If the plot suceeds to Hades'
liking, Daedalus will have to give up his own life
to allow his son to remain alive. If this occurs, Hades will strip Icarus of his Regeneration ranks, and leave him fully mortal,
but also go out of his way to point danger the young man's way, since he's
of no mind to let the boy die of old age after a long and happy life... Obviously,
the situation is fluid, and Hades may not achieve such an ideal outcome.]
