Amalgam – Buffy the Vampire Slayer (with some Faith, for seasoning) mashed up with Morningstar of the Elementals.

Elizabeth (no one has ever called her ‘Buffy,’ she prefers Liza, pronounced ‘Lie-Zah’) grew up moving around the country, as her military father moved from base to base. Liza quickly determined that there was one way to avoid trouble, and that was to establish as quickly as possible after entering a new school system that anyone who messed with her was going to have to visit the nurses office. She was small, she was slight, she had no skill whatsoever in fighting. What she did have was a paralyzing dread of losing, and a ruthless streak a mile wide. If anyone so much as looked at her sideways, she would slam a locker door on their head, or stick a kubaton in their eye. She didn’t fight to protect herself, going all out, every time, her only goal to make sure that anyone seeing this would realize that she was going for *pain,* and that was what she promised to anyone who pushed her buttons. No amount of suspension or talking to her father or threats of juvie fazed her.

She seemed almost to have a split personality, moving into a new school, busting whatever rules (and heads) needed to be busted to get people to leave her alone, and then somehow sleazing her way into the ‘in crowd,’ and quickly moving up through the ranks. At least until her father was reassigned, again, and she had to start all over again, at the bottom, with the object lessons…

That all changed when she got to south central Los Angeles, and found a group of like-minded kids, who used the exact same tactics as she did, and found herself sucked into a completely different kind of fight, against the kind of urban predators that made school bullies and gang-bangers and dirty old men look like kiddie stuff. Trapped in the library with three others, she watched them die one by one, while the grinning monster that she thought she had known locked her in the office, set fire to the books and left her to burn.

With the others, Liza didn’t just die, somehow saved at the last second by primal elemental forces, forces of the natural world that claimed to have been sorely wounded by the rise of these unnatural forces of the night, and to have chosen to strike back, to empower their own champions, in the same way that the unclean ones had empowered these night-creatures.

Liza and her newfound allies (they could hardly be called friends at first, although they are growing on her…) were empowered by the four elemental forces to become the Primal Defenders. Liza was ritually designated ‘the hands,’ able to create, or to destroy, and channeling the creative, and destructive, principles of elemental fire. She usually doesn’t ‘let the fire out to play’ in the course of ‘light work,’ just using her enhanced physical attributes to handle a fight, but when faced with supernatural forces, such as the vampires lurking the local streets, she smiles and the fire seems to flow up out of her, blowing her hair back in a warm rush. Even in a brightly lit place, she seems to be glowing, and those that contact her in this form (or, more likely, are on the receiving ends of her own punishing ‘contact’) are severely burned, as flashes of fire accompany every impact.

[No, Buffy's name isn't '
Elizabeth' in canon.  I don't care. This girl lives in LA and has elemental powers of fire, she’s not a Slayer.  I like the idea of calling her 'Liza,' since she's a bit more Faith than Buffy, and Eliza Dushku is a local girl.  It's a mash-up within a mash-up.  Very avant garde.  I'm so French...]
