Calastian Battle-Mage

Hit Die: d4

Requirements

Feats: Battle-Mage Training*, Combat Casting

Proficiencies: Simple and Martial Weapons and Light Armor

Skills: Concentration 8 ranks, Knowledge (Arcana) 4 ranks, Ride 4 ranks, Spellcraft 4 ranks

Spells: Ability to cast 3rd level arcane spells

Special: Calastian battle-mages are trained, they don’t just happen.  A mentor, political favor or other such introduction to the ranks of the ‘true’ battle-mages (though this may be as simple as an NPC being impressed with the characters potential and bringing him under her wing) is necessary to learn the finer points of this class.

Class Skills

Concentration (Con), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge (any) (Int), Ride (Dex), Ritual Casting (Con, exclusive skill), Scry (Int, exclusive skill) and Spellcraft (Int).

Class Features

Weapon and Armor proficiency:  The Calastian Battle-Mage gains no additional weapon or armor proficiencies.

Spells per day: Calastian Battle-Mages continue to gain spells / day as a member of his arcane class.  He does not gain additional abilities, such as Feats, Familiar advancements, etc.

Kiss of Mesos: [Replace with a Weapon Focus in the Battle-Mages preferred weapon in this campaign, as I am not using this Feat.]

Armored Spellcasting: A battle-mage can ignore up to this level of arcane spell failure for armor worn.

Veteran Nerves: Applies as a bonus to Concentration checks, and to Ride checks to keep a mount calm during battle.

Enhanced Counterspell: Can use any spell of the same school as the target’s spell and of equal or higher level to counterspell.  This is the same as the Improved Counterspell Feat in the FRCS.

Sorceries Afield: Effective caster level is increased by this number, but only to determine spell range.

Quick Counterspell: Need not take a readied action to counterspell, but must use his move-equivalent action to do so, even though he is technically counterspelling on another characters action.  He may still take a standard action on his initiative in the same round.  This is a superior form of the Reactive Counterspell Feat in MoF.

Mastered Counterspell: May counterspell by using either a move-equivalent or standard action.  Combined with his Quick Counterspell ability, he may take a counterspell action even on another characters turn, and can counterspell again, or ready an action to do so, in the same round on his normal initiative action.
