Andrea Cornelli was
an Italian doctor working in a combined European hospital/charity center in the Turkic Federation when she finally
came to grips with the realization that she was 40, wanted a child and didn't
seem to be able to stand any of the men whose genes she might be interested
in (or they were married/gay/whatever). She finally accepted a promotion out of field medicine back to administrative
work in Milan and on her next scheduled break she traveled to a discrete Greek
fertility clinic whose records she had perused online and was artificially
inseminated. She took over 3 months
searching and rejecting profiles before she found the one she was happiest
with and raised her genetically optimized child herself with the same level
of dedication she had shown to her career previously.
Over the next 15
years Andreas (Andy), showed a similar level of dedication, never actually
telling his mother that it was because he was holding himself against an
imaginary ‘dead father’ who was a jet pilot in the combined special forces, top of his classes, in top-notch
physical condition and a devoted husband and father. He even signed his papers, Andreas Cornelli Jr, to help subtly
foster this connection to his imaginary father.
His mother might
have done something about these potentially unhealthy signs, perhaps sent him
in for parental counseling, but since his adolescent fantasies were turning him
into the perfect student, all-around good athlete and diligent son, she really
couldn't convince herself that anything was really wrong with her baby (and he
was solely *her* baby!). It wasn't
until he was in college and received a random Latency testing with high scores
that his fantasy first affected his future in a negative fashion. He had never imagined this superdad as also
being a Psion, never even given the issue a seconds thought and he now
seriously was considering rejecting Legion membership (he already was in
officer training for the European Union Combined Military Forces, wanting to be
a pilot, like his 'dad') since he didn't see this as a proper tribute to this
imaginary father.
At this point his
mother (upon hearing his 'rationale' from a concerned roommate at the officers
school) remanded him into counseling, even breaking down at one point and
telling him that his father was a Greek fisherman and had drowned fouled in a
net 4 years prior! He spent 6 months in
counseling, most of it more to make the therapists happy than because he needed
it, and then moved on to join the Legions, assured the whole time that he was
never creating the perfect father, he was creating the perfect *self.* He barely talked to his mother, being still
angry with her for never telling him that she even knew the identity of his
genetic father, let alone that she had kept tabs on him or that he was now dead
and Andreas would never even be allowed to choose whether or not to reveal his
existence or keep his anonymity.
He was doing
superbly, throwing himself into his work (not yet activated, he was recommended
into the Third Legion to bring him up to snuff after his 6 month psych-leave)
when he heard the news of the Esperanza crash, and a few days later received
confirmation that his mother was missing.
She had been nowhere near France, nor even doing medical work, she had
been rockclimbing in the Dalmitians (alone, typically) when the station struck
the continent and even as far as northern Italy, the mountains trembled from
the impact. It was more than enough to
dislodge stones and pitons and climbers, some of whose bodies were never found. That week he declared that it was time and a
week later was Activated and joining the Fifth Legion (he had wanted assignment
in the Sixth or the Seventh, but they rotated him to give him a broader range
of experiences first).
Even in the Fifth,
Andreas usually weasels his way into the cockpit or pilots seat as often as
feasible, hoping to acquire the necessary hours and experience to be a good
candidate for the Seventh Legion.
He is just over 2
meters (6' 2") and weighs about 185 lbs, his thick black hair has been
shaved (although he still has prominent eyebrows) and his body is in superb physical
condition. Like most younger
Legionnaires he has the tattoo of his Legion in reactive inks that fade into
only a shadowy hint with the application of a catalytic skin cream, in his
case, not out of vanity or a desire or need to operate incognito, but simply
because he doesn't plan on being stuck in the Fifth for long.
