While 75% of Haiti no longer lives in abject poverty in 2120, Armand was born to a family that was.  His father at least tried to make a better life for his family, but a combination of alcoholism, illiteracy and a short and violent temper led to his dismissal from dead-end job after dead-end job punctuated by brief stints in prison for acts ranging from public drunkenness and indecent exposure to aggravated assault and petty theft.  To make matters worse, Simon le Montagne was the good parent!  Armands' mother Louise spent all of her time at home neglecting the children and herself, baked out of her mind on cheap homegrown marijuana in a desperate attempt to hide from her many failures in life, trusting in a panoply of saints and apostles to make it all right somehow, if only she kept the faith and sat around waiting patiently.  It was during one of his fathers times 'away for awhile' that the social worker came into their shack on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince and found the children sitting outside playing in the mud, bellies distended from malnutrition as their mother sat unconscious in the main room with no running water or electricity (not because the area didn't have any, but because she hadn't paid a utility bill in 6 months) and decided in that cold second to simply take the children away and not even wait around for Louise to wake up and explain the situation.

Fortunately Armand and his brother Remy were both only 7 and 4 respectively and the memories of their real parents faded away (especially in Remys' case) soon after they were taken to the clinic and brought back to health.  It was at the clinic that the pair were tested for latency and Armand scored quite strongly latent for healing talents (Remy scored only marginal, with no particular area of strength, making him something of a 'last choice') and the two attendant Rexes simply took them home to raise as their own.  Growing up with a pair of voudonist Aesculapians, Armand and Remy heard plenty about the schism between Port-au-Prince and Basel traditions ("Rigid narrow-minded bureaucrats hiding behind security guards in their crystal towers while the sick and injured huddle outside in tent slums!"), the Norca ("Controlling Sudamerica through crime, terror and addiction!"), Orgotek ("Money-grubbing capitalists in an open state of warfare with the legitimate FSA government in Tex-Mex!"), the Ministry ("Oh, don't even get me started!  Jack-booted fascist thought-police!"), etc, etc.  In fact, their new parents, despite having no actual interest in these Orders or the various governments, religions or traditions they would criticize in their endless 'debates,' pretty much gave Armand and Remy a strongly negative slant on just about everyone and everything in the modern world, heavily slanted with their own personal conspiracy theories.  Generally, they thought of this as being 'open-minded' and teaching the children to think for themselves and take no one at face value, but would get sidetracked into 'bashing' whomever they were talking about!

While Remy went on to become a voudonist houngan, Armand developed a strong dislike of this 'tree-hugging hippie crap' (possibly blaming his mothers religious beliefs for contributing to her weakness) and much favors a rigidly controlled scientific methodology finding plenty of reasons to not want to join the Port-au-Prince Aesculapian contingent after 10 years of listening to his hyper-critical foster parents complain about work.  He joined the Order all right, but not because he felt any compelling need to be a healer, more because he felt that someone needed to keep an eye on the Orders and Psions in general.  He shelved his initial mistrust of Psions and thought, 'fight fire with fire,' and agreed to go to Basel (to the immense pleasure of his parents) and undergo the Prometheus effect.  He spent four years in Basel, adding to the basic pre-med background his parents had given him with a formal MD (Basel having special dispensation due to its status and methods to pump out Doctors in less time than normal).  He then pleased the administration to no end by volunteering to work with Psions of other Orders as emergency medic and Aesculapian liaison, although he shied away from any jobs with the Ministry or ISRA as both of these Orders somewhat frighten him.  'Who watches the watchmen?' he wonders late at night, whether on assignment to the Legions for a year (during which he picked up the rudiments of Algesis from a Vitakinetic Legionnaire) or in his most recent (and frightening) assignment to work with some Norca researchers in Brazil (during which his skills in pharmaceutical research were tested in investigative research into a new synthetic drug that was being used to kill people).  He made sure to make retain Contacts with acquaintances in both Orders, mainly because, no matter how dangerous he thinks these Orders could be, he wants to KNOW what is going on.  It is only just now that an Aeon agent has found out his basic beliefs and offered him a place to fit in.  He has not actively left the Aesculapian Order, if only because he feels that he can learn more as a member and that he also owes the Order at least as many years as they dedicated to his education, if not for his entire life!

Armand is a 5' 8" black man of average appearance, about 23 years old.  He has cornrows down to his shoulders (tinted a coppery red), dark black skin and brown eyes.  While his foster parents were openly gay, he himself is bisexual and relatively quiet about it.  In addition to his near paranoia regarding his fellow Psions, Armand never liked bioapps, finding them 'wrong' somehow, apart from being merely repulsive.  The immersion into the Prometheus Chamber with its intimately invasive biogel left him shaken and nauseous at the thought of ever dealing with biotechnology again.  He avoids it at all costs, he would have to spend Willpower to overcome this revulsion, and would only do so to save the lives of others.
