Brianna's father, John Martin, had wanted a boy, and a daughter, no matter how tall (6 foot) and rugged (165 lbs) and how much she had his face (recognizably so, both Martins bear a certain resemblance to a horse actually!), wasn't quite it.  His actress wife soon after was caught cheating on him and dumped him, leaving him with his daughter and no strong desire to remarry just to have a son, so he set out to ignoring his daughter and buried himself in his work as VP in charge of marketing for Australia and the World (tm) a successful and established news program.  He made good money and his daughter really didn't suffer from his lack of attention, managing to raise herself with the aid of schoolmates (she often wouldn't be home for weeks at a time, staying with friends, or would be home with 2 other friends pretty much living at her fathers home for weeks on end) and friends.

It was in high school that she scored 4th place (missing the Bronze by that much!) at the 2116 winter Olympic games ski and shoot competition (which for Australians is definitely a 'rich mans sport'), and not so coincidentally, catching her fathers eye.  He was surprised to see her name amongst those of other Aussie Olympic athletes to be interviewed about the games and remembering as if from the blue that he had a daughter named Brianna Martin and didn't she say she was going away for some competition?

Needless to say her relationship with her father turned around on that day and they became inseparable friends from then on.  He arranged some live broadcasts for her as a 'reporter on the scene' at the remaining games and later, when she tested latent and was told that her international athletic career was over according to the laws of several of the participating nations, leaving her no chance at the 2120 Olympics, she joined the Legions (while Australian law would have allowed her to continue competing, being Psion-friendly and distinguishing between Psions and latents, she wasn't about to compete with the other six Australians who were any good at ski and shoot competitions for the rest of her life!).  Now she does a rare 'from the barracks' report for her dad's show, but other than that, she spends her time with her new friends in the Legions.

Her father has grown rather attached to his 'willow' (she has no clue where the Hell this nickname came from) and kiped one of her uniforms from home and had it fitted for armoring with Olaminium inserts (Legion uniforms already count as reinforced clothing generally) tapping his own financial resources and network of contacts pretty heavily to do so.  She was somewhat overwhelmed by this gift, although the reason that the uniform had been left behind is that it never fit quite the way she liked, leaving her with an uncomfortable and nigh-indestructible uniform.  Sigh!

She treats her bioapp like any other appliance, perfunctorily at best and negligently at worst.  Brianna had attractive long black hair (her father has strong Native American ancestry and her mother is Greek), but that was shaven off when she became a 'knob' (Legion recruit), although she has begun to (against regulations) wear it longer and longer, currently having several inches of hair under her cap, which she primarily wears to avoid flaunting her disobedience.  (Technically shaven heads are no longer required after training, but the chance of hair catching on fire (particularly during training) is high enough that most PK's don't bother growing it out.)
