Carl was born to a single parent from the FSA who moved to Luna to get away from her overbearing militant/religious husband (Carl was only 2 at the time and remembers none of this).  He learned to pull simple cons and shakedowns on the tourists fairly young as a child, growing up fairly poor as his mother had little in the way of resources when she left and took almost a decade to get back on her feet (and remarried).  It was on the streets of Luna that he learned that knowledge was power.  Those who knew things could make money, those who knew safe places to hide were immune to attack and those who knew the right people and, more importantly, what they wanted and what they would do for it, were able to have anything they wanted.  Carl was in lockup for some minor offense when he was pulled aside by a robed member of the enigmatic ISRA'n Order and run through a series of strange tests.  They smoothed things over with the authorities and suddenly Carl was free to go, on their recognizance.  The Order kept his scores secret as Carl had tested powerfully latent, but in two Aptitudes!  Still he could tell that he was the 'goose who laid the golden egg' and had something that all these bozos wanted pretty bad so he played it cool and made lots of unreasonable requests, mainly to see what he could and could not get away with.  When he received the formal request to join ISRA he had scoped out the situation and felt quite on top of it when he said that he wanted to join Orgotek instead!

The beautiful young woman who was his mentor at this point just laughed and told him that he had brass, but he had guessed wrong, he hadn't shown any potential for Electrokinesis and that his special potential would be wasted there.

He was beaten and he knew it so he salvaged the situation by becoming a member of ISRA, after being told his choices (that or the somewhat spooky Ministry).  He didn't really like either of these choices (having set his heart on a cushy Orgotek job), but the Ministry sounded far too uptight and hard-work oriented, so once it was made clear that he didn't have to become a Baha'ist, Carl accepted their offer and became Clairsentient, receiving Auxiliary training from an ISRA'n Telepath and developing the skill to understand any one other foreign speaker or to make himself understood through the most basic of Mindsharing Techniques.

He hooked up with his recruiter, in a romantic sense.  Elise was a gyre-surfing hedonistic thrillseeker, heavily into Bang, although not currently touring or having an international following (she was mainly popular on Luna and toured local venues, being more notable for packing up and touring *anywhere*).  Their seemingly random wandering finally landed them at Eyrie station just before the [Spoiler].  When it happened they were standing ready at a viewing port and the Attunement backlash was like nothing Carl had ever felt.  It was like his brain was a baby and was being born amidst violence and blood from his heaving skull, the last thing he saw before he blacked out was Elise weeping blood and clutching for her eyes as if to tear them from her skull.  When he woke up it was all over, he had missed everything and Elise was not only unhurt, she had recovered almost immediately and taken action to aid the other residents of the station while he lay helpless, a burden on their already taxed resources.  She seemed changed after this encounter and left him behind when they returned to Luna, hardly talking to him, as if it were somehow his fault for passing out (actually she simply can't deal seeing him and thinking that she could have been wiped out similarly for her stupid gyre-surfing stunts and she could have as easily gotten him killed!).

It was this act more than any dissatisfaction with ISRA that led Carl to pull out and join the Aeon Trinity.  So far he has managed to learn the most basic Technique of the Empathy Mode from an Aeon Telepath as well and eventually he will try to learn an Auxiliary Technique in Psychbending as well.
