Elena grew up in a racially mixed environment to a set of black parents in the UAN, her mother a French-speaking Morrocan and her father a Brit returning to his native culture. She turned to teaching and child-care as a career choice because she loved working with children. But when she developed Auxiliary talents in Vitakinesis she turned to the Clinic at Addes Abeba for the training and career refinements she knew she needed. She is brisk and professional and was at first somewhat offended by the idea of being assigned to 'babysit' a brain-damaged Rex in his travels. Upon meeting Tai she changed her tune quickly enough. He was everything she had ever found attractive in a man and a child wrapped into one. She has unintentionally fallen in love with her 'patient,' hard. She finds herself wishing that he could somehow be healed and restored, but then wonders if he would simply thank her and be gone from her life if that were to happen. She is angry with herself for allowing this to happen, she was supposed to be in charge of this situation, in control of the patient and her feelings and both are controlling her!
