Growing up to a large Filipino family in Manila, Raul was
already accustomed to Psions, having had an uncle working in the Ministry as a
researcher in bio-technologies and Tolerance issues. He was as surprised as anyone when he tested positive in the
standard Latency tests that all Filipinos are given as a matter of course
(which he received at a younger age than most due to his condition). But his rating was quite abysmal, the only
Order that he would be capable of joining being the Legions. While he wasn't sure that he wanted to give
up a comfortable career in engineering to becoming some sort of gung-ho war
dog, he also had a reason to leave. His
family was large, he had five siblings, all of whom were relatively normal
looking Filipinos and got along well with the thousands of Chinese citizens in
Manila, but Raul, possibly through some taint-induced genetic twist, since his
family genetics had no record of such potential, had spent much of his teen
years incapacitated by acute growing pains as his bones and muscles stretched
and pulled him to a height of two and a half meters! His slender build accentuated to the point of freakishness, he
often felt uncomfortable walking the streets of Manila, even surrounded by his
brothers and sisters, since he loomed over them and everyone in his church,
school and work.
He was ready for a change, and a place where his height
would remain unusual, but everyone didn't look roughly the same and his size
would be less startlingly different from everyone elses. In the preliminary Legion training, he met
almost a half-dozen Africans and even a Caucasian almost as tall as himself,
and most were as rail-thin as well, making him feel almost at home for once in
his life and he finally felt as if he was in a place where everyone wasn't
talking about him behind his back.
His first posting after the Chamber was to Amundsen City in
frozen Antarctica, and to his equitoreal blood it was excruciating at first, at
least until he learned how to enhance his Cryokinetic gifts, which suited his
fancy just fine as he was enthralled by the concepts of snow and ice, things
which he never would have seen at home.
He soon began research and testing into new forms of cryokinetic
expression, learned how to ski and even turned his formidable engineering
talents towards life-support systems and while he still considers himself
closely tied to his large family, he is finding himself more comfortable with
them comfortably far away than he would have at first thought possible.
