Not everyone comes out of the Prometheus Chamber the same as
they go in. Tai was the golden boy of
his family and school, his father a Chinese actor and model and his mother an
Australian PhD biochemist and CEO of her own small company newly relocated to
Shanghai, his genes seemed to include the best of both worlds and he was smart,
handsome, wealthy and strikingly friendly and pleasant company, excellent at
telling what people are really thinking and making them comfortable, a telltale
indicator of his greatest weakness, he becomes profoundly uncomfortable around
people in distress or pain, having an almost telepathic level of empathy. It came as no surprise to find him studying
medicine, since he never accepted this flaw in himself and was attempting to
harness it by repeated exposure to people in need. He saw going into medicine as a win-win situation as it would
strengthen his soft heart to deal with potentially traumatic situations rather
than leave him paralyzed and helpless in the face of life-threatening dangers
and in the process he would be helping people.
The revelation that he was psionically Gifted was just another wonderful
thing as far as he and his parents were concerned and they encouraged him in
his choice to become an Aesculapian.
When he had to be pulled from the tank in a comatose state
it was clear that his run of fortune had ended. He didn't awaken for three days, only then starting awake when a
nurse with a fresh scrape on her hands from a fall in the icy parking lot
brushed against him and he reacted to her pain by reaching forth and healing her
injury while she stood paralyzed by his wide innocent eyes. Afterwards she showed him around the ward
like the newborn child he had become, all memories of his past and higher
cognitive functions wiped away as the process had apparently 'cured' his brain
of all of the convoluted processes already inherent in the organ, leaving him
unable to speak, read, walk or think.
It took him weeks to relearn how to walk, control his bowels and feed
himself and his parents were flown in to sit with him, even though he never
would recognize them as other than nice people who cried a lot. After some experimental treatments restored
many flashes of memory to him, he now recalls snippets of his past,
frustratingly random and has re-mastered many of his past skills, but he
remains an innocent in other areas of interpersonal relationships, more
strongly affected by the process and incurable. After a brief incident where he wandered off to help someone
while in town and was lost for a week in the outskirts of Basel, he has now
been assigned a permanent aide/nurse to stay with him and make sure that he
doesn't get himself into trouble. He is
a veritable pacifist, even if he knows how to grab at or restrain people as part
of his EMT training and is a complete innocent. He will note things astutely, but not put together why they could
be happening. He might be the first to
notice the man is drawing a weapon, but it would never occur to him that this
is anything but interesting or that the firearm is dangerous.
Once loud or confusing things occur, he will usually curl up
in a safe place until they end or his acute awareness notes that someone is in
pain or distress, in which case he will sneak over to heal them. Very rarely he will show some signs of true intelligence,
but these glimpses are few and far between and his reactions can be easily
matched by a 5 year old.
