Wei An was practically groomed for a Ministry life by her
mother, a neutral member of the Office of Semiotics translations department who
used her Auxiliary Mode of the Babel Effect to good effect, teaching her
daughter three languages by the time she was only 5 years of age! When she tested positive for Latency her
mother was overjoyed, but when it was revealed that she did not have the level
of talent required to awaken into Telepathy, the disappointment was palpable
around the house. After some research
into the nature of the matter, Wei and her mother determined that she was
capable of joining the Legions (*not* likely), Orgotek or the Aesculapian Order. Any of those three had loose transfer
agreements with the each other and the Ministry, so she could be awakened into
full Psion status in one of their Chambers and return to the Ministry as a full
Psion. Exploring the options, Mentatis
seemed close enough to suit her intended role, and she chose the Aesculapians.
The Aesculapians were pleased to get rid of Wei, she had
little interest in healing and was a world-champion 'user,' usually conniving
people into doing her lessons for her, a holdover from her home-life, where
'work' meant convincing her younger brother to do something... She scoffed at their admonitions that she
should get in shape and toughen herself and remains somewhat overweight and
very lazy, exerting as little effort to get something done. She considers it a strange mark of pride
that she made it through collegiate training in linguistic studies without
actually ever working (in her opinion, but in reality she put quite a bit of
effort into her studies).
After a bit of basic medical training in Basel and the
Chamber exposure, Wei returned to Shanghai and joined the Office of Semiotics,
rising quickly through dint of her ambitious nature and prior coaching from her
mother. She is now in a small project in
the Semiotics branch to help explore the possibilities inherent to the
'universal language of thought.' Her
own side project relates to the existence of memes, neurolinguistic programs
that can travel from mind to mind and influence the beliefs and actions of the
living organism the 'idea' is infecting.
Her goal is to map various neurolinguistic deep structures in the human
brain. Once these areas are understood,
it is possible that the can be used as 'back doors' into the 'operating system'
of the human psyche, allowing even a neutral to transcend language barriers and
communicate with (or even control!) another person. Her research is leading down darker paths as she tries to create
'neurolinguistic' virii that spread from mind to mind and cripple the host,
just as a physical disease can be 'communicated' from host to host. Fortunately, she is nowhere near success...
